Peet’s Water Processed Decaf Coffees
Not All Decafs Are Created Equal
At Peet’s, we’ve always felt strongly that our decaffeinated coffees should be every bit as enjoyable as our regular, caffeinated coffees. Our customers agree, and you turn to us again and again for our uncompromising quality and taste.
Peet’s does decaf coffee a little differently than others do, and the result is that Peet’s decafs—whether in a bag, a K-Cup® pod, or in your favorite coffeebar beverage—have so much richness and depth, they taste as good as the real thing.
How Are Peet's Decaf Coffees Different?
One key difference in Peet’s decafs is that we use the same meticulously selected, high-quality beans we use in our regular coffees, not stock decaf beans from decaffeination companies. No fillers, blenders, or shortcuts. We then skillfully roast them by hand to our exacting high standards. Not all companies use the same selectivity for their decafs as for their regular coffees. We do, which is why the taste of Peet’s decafs is so delicious.
Does Peet’s Coffee Use Methylene Chloride?
No. Peet’s does not use chemicals or solvents to decaffeinate our coffees. The process is slower than the European Method used by many other brands and by the industry for more than 50 years, but we use the water method for the same reason we do everything in coffee—to achieve the highest quality for our customers.
How Does Peet’s Decaffeinate Their Coffee?
All of Peet’s decaf coffees are decaffeinated using the water process decaffeination method.
What is Water Processed Decaf Coffee?
Water processed decaf coffee is coffee that has been naturally decaffeinated with water rather than solvents to gently remove caffeine from raw green coffee beans while maintaining the beans’ distinctive flavor profile.
How Does Water Process Decaffeination Work?
Water process decaffeination occurs in steps:
1. The decaffeinator prepares a solution from pure hot water and unroasted coffee beans, then filters the caffeine out of that solution.
2. A batch of raw green coffee beans selected and supplied by Peet’s are soaked in the solution. The caffeine flows out, leaving the flavor intact.
3. The beans—full of flavor, not caffeine—are then dried and ready for careful hand roasting at Peet’s Roastery in Alameda, CA.
Are All Water Process Decafs Swiss Water® Process?
Swiss Water® is a brand name. Peet’s uses several expert water process decaffeination companies; Swiss Water® is one of them and happens to be located in Canada.
